About the Horn of Africa

Horn of Africa from Space

The Horn of Africa is the fourth largest peninsula in the world, referred to by Ancient Greeks and Romans referred as the Kingdom of Cinnamon (for the aromatic plant) or the Kingdom Incognita owing to its uncharted territory. There the Aksumite Empire thrived, becoming a major player in the commerce between the Roman Empire and India, minting their own currency, writing in their Ge'ez script.  Today the Horn of Africa consists of the countries of Sudan, DjiboutiEritreaEthiopia, and Somalia, as well as the de facto country of Somaliland

Ethiopia has a larger population than Egypt, Turkey—more people than France, Great Britain or Italy. Its 12th largest in the world, at 115 million people, second only to Nigeria in Africa, in one of the most fertile areas of the world. When all the rest of Africa was colonialized by Europeans, Ethiopia alone maintained its sovereignty, actually startling the world by defeating a modern Italian Army in 1896.

The Abyssinian church is the oldest continually existing church in the world, tracing its birth to the Ethiopian Eunuch of Acts 8. As one of the oldest nations in the world, you will find the name of Ethiopia OVER 40 times in the Bible!

Herodotus, the Greek historian, describes them as “the tallest and handsomest of men." Ethiopia is spoken of in prophecy (Psalm 68:31; Psalm 87:4; Isaiah 45:14; Ezekiel 30:4-9; Daniel 11:43; Nahum 3:8-10; Habakkuk 3:7; Zeph. 2:12). However, while Ethiopia is 15th in the world in terms of population, it struggles with achieving it's potential in the mind of God.

Sudan, with a population of 45 million, is geographically the third largest country in Africa. It is a land rich in oil, silver and gold.  Its recorded history goes back to the time of the Pharaohs, appearing in Egyptian records as early as the reign of Mentuhotep II (21st century BC). The Hebrew Bible mentions "Cush" some 54 times.  Moses married a Cushite woman (Num. 12.1), their armies of were admired for their skillfulness (Jeremiah 46:90) and yet Psalm 68:31 prophecies that one day Cush will submit to the Lord!
